Twice every week, Detour delivers the status update on Detroit straight to your inbox. Our experimental email startup and community-focused content is funded by the likes of Facebook, The Information and the Community Foundation of SE Michigan. And our Emerging Voices program mentors Detroiters from across the city to tell stories about their neighborhoods.
We’re looking for an editorial intern to help us grow and engage our local audience. You’ll help us carry out experiments and shape new ideas in audience engagement, community-based journalism and revenue growth. This is an opportunity for a curious, inquisitive student to make their mark on a growing startup and develop highly sought after skills for today’s newsrooms and agencies.
Your weekly duties might include: content creation, social, website and email production, engaging with our paid members, helping plan events and/or growing our local audience. You’ll spend 10-15 hours per week with our team at our office in Detroit’s Tech Town, a hub for entrepreneurial activity. You won’t be stuck in a corner with mindless tasks to complete. We’re looking for a junior team member to support and nurture — and we’re excited to learn from you, too!
You don’t have to be a journalism major (we weren’t) — but you should care about the product we’re building and be able to contribute your own ideas and experience to your work. This internship can be taken for college credit or not — we’re flexible on the details. And because everyone deserves equal access to opportunities, we’ll pay you $50 every week to defray any costs (like transportation or lunches).
