Detour provides the status update on Detroit — original journalism, curated links to the info you need to know and the best events, delivered straight to your inbox. We’re a new kind of local news outlet, dedicated to building community, spotlighting neighborhood-level issues and providing important stories about our city through an equitable perspective.Â
We believe a local news outlet needs to listen to its audience and work alongside its readers to promote change. That’s what we’ve aimed to build with Detour, and with the help of loyal readers like you. If Detour is part of your local news habit, we’re asking you to take the next step and become a member of the Detour community. By becoming a member, you’re helping shape independent local journalism and supporting our mission to keep local news free and accessible to every Detroiter.
Funding quality journalism and the future of a next-generation news company feels good. But generosity isn’t the only reason to join the Detour community. Thanks to grants from the Facebook Community Network and Google News Innovation Challenge, we’re creating a program to reward our members with the access and perks that community journalism funders like you deserve.
Detour supports training for local writers, giving them the tools and platform to share stories that matter to them and their neighbors, and creating opportunities for readers to engage more deeply with how the reporting matters for their communities. Our Facebook group provides mutual aid opportunities and important resources (okay, and pet photos) and helps members connect with other great people. In our 2019 Emerging Voices Fellowship, fellows from six neighborhoods across Detroit spotlit issues including growing food autonomy in Brightmoor, grappling with state reading standards in Lafayette Park, tensions over an influx of white residents in the Russell Woods-Sullivan Area; and much more.Â
In 2020, Detour’s community-powered journalists are going deeper into the complex systems and relationships that make Detroit one-of-a-kind. Your membership supports this critical independent journalism and gives you the opportunity to connect more deeply to the reporters whose work resonates with you.
