How to snoop inside the quirkiest homes in Detroit

We’ve seen plenty of architecture tours in Detroit — it’s a great way to peek inside stately historic neighborhoods like Boston Edison or get the story behind iconic downtown landmarks. But the Weird Homes Tour, in Detroit this weekend, is something else. The national event, which started in Austin in 2014, has pinpointed some of the most unique interiors around the city and suburbs. From the looks of the photos, you’re going to want to check them out in person this Saturday.

Julién Godman, coordinating the group’s local PR, told us a little bit about what makes the tour — and Detroit’s homes — a little different.

Anything surprising you guys came across when planning the tour?

“We’ve found Detroit to be a quite a mix. Rehabbed homes, new construction, art projects, passion projects and my favorite — unique homes full of collections and things found on homeowners’ travels throughout their life.”

What can people who take the tour expect to see?

“The aim of the tour is to inspire others to approach their own homes with a sense of creative, DIY reflections. To reshape what the norm is, to something imaginative and empowering — something beyond eggshell white and Ikea is the goal. I’d add a personal note here, that having something different and special doesn’t have to be expensive either: a home is what you make it.”

The tour goes down on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is self-guided, so you can move at your own pace and get tips from residents on bringing a little more one-of-a-kind weird into your space. Tickets run $30 or $45 for VIP tour with access to an additional location and some swag. Ten percent of gross ticket sales will be donated to the United Community Housing Coalition nonprofit.
