We’re looking for one or two smart & savvy newsletter contributors to help produce Detour Detroit’s weekly newsletters and signature journalism.

You’re a news-obsessed writer who can nail deadlines and can be trusted to deliver on assignments while working from home (at least until COVID is over).

You don’t just keep up with the best local journalism being published around the city — you have something to say about it, and share our passion for meeting readers where they are and creating habits around local news consumption. And you have ideas and the capacity to produce short articles, profiles and Q&As on topics our readers care about, with an overarching goal of making local news easier to follow and understand.

Our newsletter production schedule requires this hire to work on deadline Mondays and Wednesdays to produce timely content for our Tuesday and Thursday emails in collaboration with Detour editors. 

You’ll also have the opportunity to produce special sections of the newsletter and inform readers based on Detour’s intel — always with our signature voice and commitment to the reader. Production days require your attention and availability for most of the day, but we’re flexible (if you need to go make dinner, make dinner)!

Candidates will be paid a flat rate for production of each Detour newsletter, with additional fees for special sections and articles.

This is a part-time, freelance opportunity with consistent deadlines and a short turn-around, which is why you’ll need to be a fast reader, confident wordsmith, and engaged social media user. Our ideal candidate is a published writer looking for a reliable part-time opportunity with a growing startup. 

You are confident working with or learning digital tools like MailChimp, GoogleDocs, WordPress, Facebook and Instagram, and Slack. Ideally, you’ve had experience working remotely and communicating via Slack to complete projects as a team. Teamwork makes the dream work!
